First Steps to Sensitization Testing

  • Do You Really Need Sensitization Testing?

  • Above all….Know your test material?

  • Know your regulatory requirements?

  • Are there in vitro alternatives?

Do You Really Need Sensitization Testing?

You must determine if you require sensitization testing based on need. Product stewardship, worker safety issues, ingredients and final product testing, required by regulations????

If your answer is “yes”, pull up your boots and let’s get going.

How well do you know your test material?

You can possibly narrow down candidates for testing based on formulation. Assuming you are familiar with your materials ingredients and the interaction between them. Is it an irritant? Still need to push development….then what is the highest non-irritating concentration.

Know your regulatory requirements?

Are you submitting this data to a regulatory agency? Well…you will need GLP testing performed.

Are there in vitro alternatives?

In an industry, like Cosmetics, that has responded to societal demands by restricting the use animal toxicology tests? Well….here are a few in vitro alternatives: DPRA, h-CLAT, IVSA, KeratinoSens.

One single assay probably won’t tell you much about your material, and it is widely been accepted that an integrated testing strategy should be used to better determine the sensitization potential of your material.  See Integrated In Vitro Sensitization (IIVS) Testing Strategy.

These points aren’t the only things one should consider when screening for sensitization potential.  To be confident of the safety level of your material and any impact on human health, in depth testing may be needed.  But an important element you should ensure you have on your side is an experienced and knowledgeable Toxicologist with expertise in both in vitro and in vivo testing systems.  MB Research.
